Despite significant recent advances, liver transplantation is the only life-saving treatment in around 30% of cases.\u00a0Causes of ALF are numerous, including paracetamol toxicity, other drug and toxin-induced liver injury, viral hepatitis (A, B or E) , autoimmune hepatitis, Wilson&#8217;s disease, hepatic ischemia, Budd-Chiari Syndrome, pregnancy-associated conditions and malignant infiltration. In 20 &#8211; 50% of cases, a cause cannot be determined.\u00a0Diagnostic strategies vary widely around the world, but always require careful review of medication and dietary exposure, serological testing for viral and autoimmune causes, and liver imaging.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ilts--is-shortcode\"><p><div class=\"spacer25\"><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because of its rarity, acute liver failure has not been studied in large, randomized trials. Most treatment recommendations are based on observational studies and expert opinion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ilts--is-shortcode\"><p><div class=\"spacer25\"><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>SIG Aims<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To promote communication between clinicians treating patients with ALF, allowing them to share experiences and information on clinical practice,<\/li>\n<li>To encourage international and multidisciplinary involvement in ALF research and education<\/li>\n<li>To disseminate ALF research findings through enhanced ILTS educational initiatives, including the Annual Congress, dedicated webinars, single-topic meetings, and joint meetings such as the AASLD-ILTS Transplant Course<\/li>\n<li>To develop research questions, consensus statements and clinical guidelines on liver transplantation for ALF,<\/li>\n<li>To collaborate with other organisations to promote research and standards of care in this condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ilts--is-shortcode\"><p><div class=\"spacer25\"><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/old.ilts.org\/account\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-18324 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG-300x141.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG-1024x481.png 1024w, https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG-768x361.png 768w, https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG-16x9.png 16w, https:\/\/wp-ilts-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/14103315\/How-to-join-SIG.png 1221w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Variation in causes of ALF worldwide<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explore development of an international registry through ILTS membership networks.
